What to ask, and why

Will they just mop it up and spray something?

Sewage is Category 3 water. Porous materials it reached, like carpet, pad, and lower drywall, should be removed, and hard surfaces cleaned and sanitized. Ask what will be removed and why.

Are the crews trained to handle contamination?

Ask. Sewage work calls for protective equipment and training in handling contaminated water; ask what training the crew has and what gear they'll wear.

Is this covered?

Many policies exclude backup unless you added an endorsement. Ask for photos and an itemized estimate to document the loss; your insurer decides.

Who's responsible for the sewer line?

Usually you own the lateral between the house and the city main. When a whole block backs up at once, report it to Thornton's utilities department.

When can my family use the basement again?

After removal, sanitizing, and drying are verified, rebuilding can start. Ask for the timeline once the affected area is mapped.
